No excuse not to make it out to this one, folks! Its cold outside, its only gonna get worse, so why not spend an evening away from it all with the beautiful ladies of Super Happy Funtime Burlesque?!? This Sunday brings our third annual Xmas show, a seasoned tradition for our little burlesque family, and such great numbers as 'Santa Claus is Much too Fat' and the 'Dance of the Burlesque Fairy'. Plus we've got great brand new acts like Mrs Claus catching on to why Santa stays out so late on Xmas eve in 'Lemme Smell Yo Dick', we've got Herpee the Elf who wants to be a Gynecologist, and seeing as our show falls on the first day of Hanukah we have a very special number we like to call 'Tradition' honoring all of our Jewish burlesque dancers.
Not to be missed folks, one time to see it and its gone!!

| boston marriage REVIEW!!! |
[Aug. 15th, 2008|11:08 am] |
Theater: 'Boston Marriage' a love match Friday, August 15, 2008 By Sue Merrell The Grand Rapids Press The fast-paced scheming and sharp reversals of David Mamet's "Boston Marriage" seems a fitting initiation for Dog Story Theater, a new venue that passed its final inspection in the former Waddell Furniture building on Taylor Avenue about two hours before Thursday night's opening performance.
Although final lighting adjustments caused the play to start about 10 minutes late, and the planned video previews of coming attractions had to be scrapped, scratchy recordings from the early 20th century such as "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" turned the clock back to the play's setting in Victorian Boston. With the full house of about 50 people seated in folding chairs along three sides of the room and a stage furnished in wicker and chintz filling the center, it felt like a parlor play appropriate to the era.
The term Boston marriage was used in the late 19th century to describe independent women who lived together without males. It was more a description of feminist independence than sexual choice.
Though the relationships in Henry James' "The Bostonians" were not necessarily sexual, the two women in the center of this tale leave little doubt they have shared a physical relationship. But their intimacy isn't exclusive. Anna (Joy-Elizabeth Lawrence), the older of the two women, has found a wealthy man willing to provide her some income and gifts in exchange for sexual favors. Neither of the women seem to see this as a threat to their relationship, because they both have such disdain for men. But when Claire (Amy McFadden) announces she is in love with a girl young enough to still be chaperoned by her mother, Anna is devastated by the betrayal.
This is a lover's quarrel with all the pomp and pretense of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest," but sizzling with Mamet's mastery of minutiae. Adding to the humor is a Scottish maid, Catherine (Janelle Mahlmann), who keeps interrupting and ends up in tears when she becomes the brunt of their anger.
Director Rachel Finan uses the space well, with the actors constantly moving. And the pacing is good, especially the buildup to the surprise revelation at the end of the first scene, although a little better fade-to-black would have cinched the moment.
McFadden is spot-on as the betraying "best friend" who has the audacity to ask for Anna's help in setting up her love affair. Lawrence is a bit over-the-top and melodramatic, but becomes more natural as the plot thickens and Anna comes up with a wild seance scheme to help save the day. Mahlmann is hilarious as the blubbering maid, with a very believable Scottish brogue.
In between the wit and nonsense, the play makes some interesting commentary about the expectations of youth and the perspective of age. Although the baseboards weren't up yet and the flooring wasn't laid in the entry way, the new theater offers large, well-appointed restrooms and a freshly paved, lighted parking lot off Ionia Avenue.
And when Thursday's performance was over, many of the mostly younger audience lingered to visit. It's a good beginning. Send e-mail to the author: smerrell@grpress.com |

| things occur claire...it is the nature of things |

 mommie dearest
 mommie dearest
urban yoga these are a few of the things that have occurred in the last few weeks.
i have been so damn tired. i have been working 12 hour days this includes and hour bike ride (there and back) 8 hours of selling make up on a cement floor and right after work... rehearsal for boston marriage. somewhere in there i eat, usually some form of bread and cheese. my eyes start to glaze over and people start to comment on my appearance. "you look beat" that was the one i got last night.
in the past week i... stopped a woman's bloody nose who drunkenly fell into my front door during yoga class. she had no shoes on and her shirt was falling off of her...was startled by a man with a glass eye who appeared out of nowhere and asked the cast of boston marriage if we had any grey poupon...was told that the cooks at roses think i'm "not bad looking"...planned my attack...and spun fire at the artist market, with jesse jumping and spinning in his kilt with his bagpipe...and then shortly after was accosted by the man with the glass eye again.
kisses... |

corey painted our front room red! it looks so great. he worked his little bum off.
besides the burlesque show i have been directing Boston Marriage by David Mamet. it will be the very first show in the new Dog Story space. here is the flier.

on a side note: if i had to rely on other people to cast me in shows/films i have a feeling i would be waiting a long time. best to create your own destiny.
damn it! it is michigan i know it! time to become more notorious. |
